I am always so happy when I see integration taking strides in Deutschland. For this year’s Karneval, the Ratinger Carnival Committee choose a couple of African heritage to be their Karnevalsprinzenpaar.
Samuel Awasum and his wife Jacinta Awusa are originally from Cameroon. Mr Awasum described the task as "incomparable honour".
The 33-year-old is an economist and a father of two. He is also chairman of the Ratinger Integrationsrat and has been fighting for years against racism and discrimination. Mr. Awasum came to Germany in 2002 and naturalised as a German citizen in 2008.
Ratigen in the second city after Aachen to have a couple of African Heritage as their Karnevalprinz in North Rhine-Westphalia.
In 2012, Balam Byarubanga from Uganda became the carnival prince in Aachen. His costume now hangs in the House of History in Bonn.
Congratulations Mr and Mrs Awasum! I guess I might be spending Karneval in Ratingen this year.
