The Einbürgerungstest

April 6, 2016

What is the Einbürgerungstest?

It is one of the main criteria for qualifying for German citizenship. It is basically to demonstrate a knowledge of the legal and social system and of living conditions in Germany. A lot of people make a lot of noise about test to make it scary but trust me it is not. I took it in the second year of being in Germany and passed with limited knowledge of Deutsch! So you can to. It is basically 33 questions on life in Germany, politics, history and the social institutions in Germany.

Who needs to take it?

If you want to get your german passport this is a must. There is no going around it.

Luckily there are no preliminary qualification processes. You don't have to be in germany for a particular number of years neither do you have to take any course. All you need to do is to go and register when you are ready. A pass in the test is valid forever and doesn't expire.

There are however few exceptions

•             If you have a German school leaving certificate. (Schulabschluss)

•             Or if you cannot meet the requirements due to a physical, mental or mental illness, disability or age.

What exactly does the test entail?

The test has 33 questions and you have 60 minutes to answer the questions.

All the questions are multiple choice.

It can only be taken in German.

30 questions would be about themes like "living in a democracy", "History of Germany and Responsibility of citizens" and "People and Society".

Three test questions would be about the federal state in which you are registered in as your primary residence or live in.

Where can you take it?

You can register for the test at the test centers of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees. There is a link to the list of centers.

How much does it cost?

As of today the 13 of December 2016, the naturalization test cost 25 euros .

What is the pass crietria?

You must at least answer at least 17 questions  out of the 33 correctly to pass the test. If you answered less than 17 questions correctly, you can repeat the test.

What do I need to do on the day of the test?

Show up on time and bring along a pen and a valid ID.

What happens after you take the test?

You will then receive the results by post from the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees. If you are successful your certificate would be include in the post.

How can I prepare for a naturalization test?

The best way to prepare for the naturalization test by the questions in the online test center of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees .

The preparation booklets consists of a total of 310 questions, of which 300 are general questions and 10 questions to the state in which you live.

You can also fill out a sample test sheet in the online test center. Use of the Online Test Centre of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees is free

I have also included a list of good websites to study and my personally translated version of the 310 questions in English by the side of the German questions to make things easier.
